Your NEET All India Rank is not just your score — it is your position among every candidate who appeared for the exam. Here is a transparent breakdown of how NEET ranking, percentile calculation, and tie-breaking rules work.
Each correct answer gives +4 marks. Each incorrect answer costs -1 mark (for MCQ questions). Unanswered questions receive 0 marks. Your total out of 720 is your raw NEET score.
Your percentile shows the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or below you. A 99th percentile means you outperformed 99% of test-takers. Percentiles adjust for slight variations in difficulty across multiple exam shifts.
If two candidates score identical marks, NEET breaks ties in this order: (1) Higher marks in Biology, (2) Higher marks in Chemistry, (3) Higher marks in Physics, (4) Older age gets preference, (5) Fewer incorrect answers.
Your AIR is your final position among all NEET candidates nationwide after applying tie-breaking rules. This is the rank used by MCC for 15% All India Quota counseling and by most deemed universities.
State ranks differ from AIR. Each state calculates its own rank based on state quota rules, domicile requirements, and reserved category seats within state institutions. Your AIR gives you a national perspective while state ranks determine state-quota eligibility.
Category ranks (OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PwD) are calculated within each category's merit list. Reserved category candidates are considered in both the general merit list and their specific category list, giving them two pathways for seat allocation.
